The Lotus Flower, or the Awakened Heart, flowers through fidelity to everyday experience, this world of pleasure and pain - your life, my life, our life together. A spirituality that seeks to escape ordinary experience does not lead to a flowering in the sunlight of Grace. When one seeks escape from the world, the Heart is closed to life, to others. The Buddha, under the Bodhi Tree, touched Earth with his hand, noting Earth was witness to his preparedness for enlightened compassion. Earth, or matter, including our anchoring here in body, is integral to enlightened action. We allow an inscape into growing intimacy with life, not an escape from life. I teach no escapist ideology. Come with me to life, deeper into life. We shall go, together. And we are free, while we walk this Earth.

The Lotus Flower grows from the mud and through the waters, regularly 8 to 12 inches above the surface, due to the strength of the stem - no other water lily rises this high. The bloom emits a sweet scent. The Lotus Flower is a central symbol in Buddhism, linked with compassion arising from the Heart. Also, the Lotus Flower symbolizes a being growing from the primeval mud of matter, through the waters of experience, into the bright sunshine of enlightenment - or the awakened, compassionate Heart.
